Tactics of the Infantry Battalion

A book under the above title will soon be published. The book has been approved as useful, modern and instructive by the competent authorities. It contains 30 developed tactical tasks, divided into groups:

Marching: daytime and nighttime. Billeting: bivouacking and quartering. Advance guards: permanent and on the march. (Combat advance guards are discussed under certain types of defence.) Combat by the vanguard: three examples. Combat by the flank guard: two examples. Deployment: one example. Attack: five examples. (One of the examples illustrates combat within the interior of an enemy position. This example provides guidance for conducting a war game.) Encounter battles: two examples. Defence: four examples. (One example shows a detailed procedure for organizing a position.) Pursuit: three examples. (In these, the battalion is taken through three interesting phases of pursuit. The examples may serve as a basis for conducting a war game.) Rear guard actions: two examples. Disengagement — withdrawal: daytime and nighttime. Appendices: cartographic symbols, key for infantry coordination with aviation and artillery, and five map extracts (scale 1:100,000) for studying tasks.

The tasks are presented and developed in the same manner as required of candidates during certain practical examinations. Half of the tasks include the following sections: situation assessment with decision, work plan and orders. The other half include: situation assessment with decision and orders. Most of the tasks are set on manoeuvrable terrain, with a smaller number on rugged and mountainous ground. The development of the scenarios shows the action of the battalion in coordination with rapid units.

This book contains knowledge that forms the basis for understanding tactics and solving tactical tasks. As such, it is useful not only to infantry officers, but also to officers of other army branches. The book also holds great practical value for the troops, as it provides instructions for conducting various tactical exercises and war games.

The book measures 14 by 22 cm, has an attractive semi-hard cover and contains approximately 300 pages, including 28 sketches in the text and 5 map extracts (appendices) for studying the tasks.

Due to its size and technical features, publishing this book involves higher costs, so the number of printed copies will be limited to subscribers only.

The price of the book is 80 dinars. Payment may be made in four monthly instalments: the first upon delivery of the book, and the remaining three by cheque. Subscribers will receive the cheques together with the book (cheque account number 2040 — Sarajevo).

I appeal to comrades and friends to help gather subscribers and make it possible for me to publish this book, with the hope that it will be of practical use to all.
